New York classifies criminal offenses as violations, misdemeanors or felonies. Persons convicted of violations may be sentenced to not more than 15 days of imprisonment. If the sentence for a criminal offense falls between 15 days of imprisonment and one year of imprisonment, that offense is a misdemeanor. There are 3 levels of misdemeanor in New York State A, B and unclassified. A misdemeanors carry a potential sentence of up to and including one year in jail. B misdemeanors can carry up to 90 days in jail and unclassified misdemeanors can carry up to one year in jail. Finally, a felony is an offense that carries a sentence of greater than one year of imprisonment. There are 5 levels of felony in New York they range from A-E. A being the highest and possibly carry life in prison to an E felony which is the lowest and by definition has to carry at least a year and a day in jail.
