24/7 for Emergency Help and Advice on Bail

If you or a loved one has been arrested or is facing an Arrest, you already know that it can be a frightening and bewildering experience. The actual Arrest could have taken place by being in the "wrong place at the wrong time," or maybe you were stopped by police and questioned prior to your Arrest, such as with a DWI. Perhaps you have been arrested pursuant to a Bench Warrant, Violent Felony or even a Traffic ticket. Regardless of how it actually happened, it is important to remember that first and foremost, just because you suffered an Arrest does not mean you are guilty. If there has been an Arrest or you are facing a situation where it is likely you will be the target of an Arrest, it is extremely important to contact a Manhattan Criminal Lawyer at your first opportunity. Remember anything you say (or don't say) can have an impact on your future criminal case. As a general rule asserting your 5th amendment right of being silent and asserting your right to have an attorney is the best course of action for a defendant or someone being investigated by a law enforcement official. This applies whether you were arrested and brought to a New York State Criminal Court for any misdemeanor such as Petite Larceny or Assault or a felony, which can include a Sex Crime such as a Rape, or even possession or distribution of Child Pornography. Further, there are arrests made by federal law enforcement officials which may be prosecuted by the U.S. Attorneys office in Federal Court. A series of crimes you often see in Federal Court are categorized as White Collar Crimes, and they may include Bank Fraud, Mail Fraud or Securities Fraud. If you are facing the weight of the Federal Government in a criminal case it is important to have the guidance of a Federal Criminal Defense Lawyer to assert you rights in the complex Federal Court legal system. At Stephen Bilkis & Associates, PLLC we are available for a free consultation in Manhattan as well as Long Island and Westchester County.

It is important to note that if you have received a Desk Appearance Ticket, you were the subject of an arrest, and you will be processed in the same manner had you been arrested in the traditional sense and held in jail. The distinction here is that after you are processed, you will be released and not held in custody until your Arraignment. Rather, you will be freed and expected to return at a designated time for your Arraignment.

Once you get over the initial shock of the arrest, it is important that you and your loved ones formulate a plan on what to do next. If you were arrested in Manhattan by any of the following police precincts you will be taken to Central Booking:

Manhattan Central Booking is located at 100 Centre Street (near Leonard and Franklin Street). If you are trying to locate a loved one that has been arrested, the phone number for Central Booking is (212) 374-3838 or (212) 374-9616. During the next 24 or so hours you will be held in jail, awaiting your Criminal Court Arraignment. This is a critical time, and it is important that you are well aware of your rights.

It is within the power of the Police Department to interrogate any defendant that has been accused of a crime. A new policy has been put into place that takes interrogations to the next level, and the District Attorney now has broader power to interrogate you (and record it) while you are being held in custody. These interrogations will take place regardless of your guilt or innocence. Even if you believe you are innocent, it is important to avoid questioning by the police without the guidance of a Manhattan Arrest Lawyer. Needless to say this is a sensitive situation, where anything you say can have a significant impact on your case. It is extremely important during this critical time to secure the protection of a New York Criminal Lawyer. Having counsel present can prevent the interrogation from happening at all. When your Criminal Lawyer states that you will not be answering any questions (exercising your right to remain silent), the police or District Attorney may not legally engage you in any questioning.

Being arrested is stressful, and only the beginning of a legal journey ahead. Navigating through the Manhattan Criminal Court system can be daunting without the benefit of a Manhattan Arrest Lawyer. How you proceed, and what you say or don't say can set the tone for your criminal case ahead. At Stephen Bilkis & Associates, PLLC, we can offer you support and guidance, as well as a free initial consultation. We have offices located throughout New York, from Manhattan to Queens plus the Bronx and Brooklyn, as well outlying counties such as Suffolk County and Westchester County. ★★★★★
My wife and I met under some unconventional circumstances. After I had some legal problems, Mr Bilkis and his firm continually got me out of trouble. I then had his firm represented my wife and he got her out of trouble! We are still married and got our ways straightened away. We both can't thank him enough for saving our lives and our families! J.P.

I contacted Stephen Bilkis' office for an issue regarding a family member and I could not be happier with the results. I have recommended the firm to friends and family, all of whom were also ecstatic with Mr. Bilkis and all members of his staff. P.R.

I was in need of legal assistance for a very sensitive matter for a family member. I contacted the law offices of Stephen Bilkis & Associates, PLLC and was met with staff whose demeanor was supportive, compassionate and professional. The lawyer handling our case had many years of experience and treated us as if we were his own family. Our experience was so good, and we became so close to all of the staff and all of the attorneys who assisted us, that we consider them our extended family and continue to send them our home baked gifts for the holidays.
